Welcome to the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association's 2014 Stallion Service Auction!  We're excited that you have chosen to take a look at the stallion seasons which have been donated to the MTA's annual fundraiser. Happy shopping! You're sure to find the perfect nick with your mare!

It was an exciting year for Canterbury Park and the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association is looking forward to carrying that excitement into the 2015 breeding season and beyond!  Our Minnesota-breds will be running for more money than ever and this is the perfect time for you to breed Minnesota-breds that will have tremendous opportunities on the track!

Canterbury Park concluded its 2014 racing season September 13th, and though handle was down slightly year over year, there were many indicators of a healthy race meet. There was increase in the number of barns shipping in this season, a tremendous amount of claiming activity, and the record Minnesota Thoroughbred Association sale this year all point to a thriving and rebounding Thoroughbred industry. Minnesota looks forward to building on this in 2015 and beyond

Total purses for the meet were up 5.4 percent over 2013 with the track paying out $13,120,706 over the 68-day season. Field size, which was a decade-best 8.36 horses per race in 2013, remained steady with 2014 fields averaging 8.22 starters per race. Claiming activity at the Shakopee oval was up sharply year over year, with the number of horses claimed nearly doubled from 2013, 165 compared to 65, with a total value of more than $1,000,000, an increase of 79.3 percent year over year. While the track still enjoyed robust average attendance, averaging 6,419 fans per race day, on-track handle slipped 7.5 percent year over year. Out-of-state handle, however, remained strong, essentially flat after the giant 31.8 percent increase from 2012 to 2013.

Minnesota is a terrific place to foal and raise your 2016 baby! To be certified as a Minnesota-bred, in-foal mares need to be in Minnesota and registered with the Minnesota Racing Commission prior to foaling or by March 15th at the latest.  Stallions must be registered with the MRC by January 31st.  Full details on Minnesota’s Breeders’ Fund Program and registration forms are available at

Please be sure to read the following information carefully to insure that you understand all of the guidelines and benefits of our auction.  Unfortunately we've been forced to develop strict policies regarding non-payment on winning bids. We've experienced too many instances where individuals have placed the winning bid and refused to make payment or required a great deal of extra work to ultimately receive the payment.  We appreciate those bidders who are prompt and follow the rules!

Bid Early!  Bid Often!  And, most importantly, BID LAST!

All progeny of the 2015 breeding season of stallions sold during this online auction have the unique opportunity to be nominated to the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association's Stallion Auction Races, regardless of where they are foaled!

Mare owners who purchase a season at the MTA’s 2014 Stallion Service Auction will be able to nominate one foal to the 2019 MTA Stallion Auctions Stakes for an all-time low nomination fee of $100!  Buyers must  pay the $100 fee at the time of purchase to nominate one mare. Stallion owners donating a season that sells will have the same opportunity to nominate one mare for $100 as well.  The mares must be named by October 31, 2015, for the resulting foal to be eligible for the 2019 race.  The early nomination fee of $100 is non-refundable and non-transferable.

A form for naming the mare, whose resulting 2016 foal will be eligible for the 2019 MTA Stallion Auction Stakes: Filly Division or Colt/Gelding Division, will be sent to stallion season buyers who choose to take advantage of this new opportunity and significant cost savings! The mare identification forms will be mailed in mid-September, 2015, to allow the mare to be named and paperwork to be returned on or before October 31, 2015.

For those buyers choosing not to take advantage of the early nomination option, the regular nomination fee of $200 is payable May 1st of the two-year-old year, or May 1, 2018.  A late nomination option will remain at $1000, payable on or before May 1st of the three-year-old year, or May 1, 2019.

All KY Stallions seasons purchased must add 6% KY Sales Tax to the final bid.  The MTA will be responsible for forwarding the sales tax to the stallion owner.

All seasons purchased online must be paid for using MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover or PayPal.

5% handling fee will be added to final bid.

At the end of the auction, invoices will be sent to each winning bidder which will include further instructions and a total dollar amount due.

Payment must be made by December 12, 2014.

Any winning bidder who is invoiced, but does not make the appropriate payment before the deadline will be reported to  This individual will be blocked from bidding in future Minnesota Thoroughbred Association auctions and may be blocked from other auctions offered on as well.
